Unfortunately, this is a scam which is a worldwide problem and is not specific to this country or any network. It is known as Wangiri Fraud, where fraudsters intend to encourage customers to call back so they can charge them international rates when they do so. They use robot diallers which generate random number values and place thousands of calls extremely fast. These diallers are also programmed to change the number range from where they are placing the call very regularly in order to make blocking them very difficult.
At Vodafone, we’re committed to reducing the impact of this type of international scam call on our customers as we deeply understand the inconvenience.
Our teams constantly monitor our network to identify these numbers as they come up, and proactively block outgoing calls immediately (to avoid our customers being charged in case they call back by mistake). Simply blocking a range of numbers or a country or region from placing calls to our network is not allowed by law as this may block out genuine calls within that region. It’s very important to note that the numbers fraudsters call are at random. They do not have any access to our customer database but are using random calling based on country and operator prefixes. We take our customers’ privacy extremely seriously and no information is shared with regard to our customer details with any external parties without express permission from our customers.
We are also actively looking into finding further improved options to fight this type of crime. We will release information on progress as this happens.
What can you do to prevent this?
We encourage you to help our fraud monitoring teams identify these numbers when they happen by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
