Things you need to know before going abroad…

  • Roaming in EU countries from June 2017

As from June 2017, you are able to use your mobile plan while roaming in the EU just like you would if you were in Malta, at no extra cost.

The Roam Like At Home upgrades will be automatically added and enabled by default to any one of our roaming enabled tariffs.

How does this change affect me?

When you travel abroad and use your mobile phone to call, text or browse the internet, you are roaming. Simply put, the concept of Roam Like at Home means that if you are travelling abroad in any of the EU countries, you will be able to use your phone as though you are still in Malta. However, there are some specifics to keep in mind which shall be explained further.

When it comes to bundles, the volume of SMS, any-net minutes and internet you have available towards any local network before leaving Malta will also be available when you land in an EU country.

It is important to note that “on-net” (i.e. Vodafone to Vodafone only) calls/SMS bundles, discounts and free options are not applicable in Europe as these were specifically developed to be used locally on Vodafone Malta’s own infrastructure.

The European Commission’s ‘fair use policy’ makes reference to very specific cases such as bundles which boast a high internet allocation. In these cases, the internet allowance to be used in the EU will be capped and additional usage will be charged the same rates as in Malta. If you exceed your local tariff allocations of calls, SMS and mobile internet when roaming in EU countries, you will be charged as though you are still in Malta. This means that the out of bundle rates you have locally, will be applied in EU countries.

In the event that you have no bundle allocation and top-up as you go, you will be charged the same rates as in Malta.

In which European countries can I Roam Like at Home?

    In the following 36 countries:

    Austria Belgium Bulgaria Croatia
    Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Estonia
    Faroe Islands Finland France Germany
    Gibraltar Greece Hungary Iceland
Ireland Isle of Man Italy Jersey
    Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg
    Monaco Norway Poland Portugal
    Romania Slovenia Slovakia Spain
Sweden Switzerland The Netherlands United Kingdom

Do I have to worry on which operator the person I am calling is on, or whether it is a fixed or mobile?

No, there is no difference if you are calling a different operator or if they are a fixed or mobile line.

Can I buy a SIM card in different Member States?

Yes, you can. However, it is important to note that the general rule is that if you spend more time in Malta and use your mobile more in Malta than in the EU, you cannot benefit from the Roaming ’17 changes. This is in line with the Fair Use Policy

    Conditions for fair use

The Fair Use Policy (FUP) Vodafone is based on guidelines from the European Commission to prevent unreasonable use abroad. "Roam-like-at-Home 'is not intended to unreasonably (permanent) use abroad. This is why the European Commission precautions established for mobile operators to prevent unreasonable use. The Fair Use Policy (conditions for fair use) is part of our Terms of Service.

    What is unreasonable use?

If there is unreasonable consumption and if you spend more than four months in the EU outside of Malta, Vodafone sends you a message requesting to change your (roaming) behaviour or provide further information.

If your behaviour has not changed after 14 days you will be charged a surcharge for abusive and anomalous usage while roaming.

The ‘fair use policy’ also applies to very specific cases such as bundles which boast a high internet allocation. In these cases, the internet allowance to be used in the EU will be capped and additional usage will be charged the same rates as in Malta.

  • Before you leave

Before going abroad, we recommend that you:

    • - Check that you are getting the best value rates when travelling abroad by being on one of our RED Plans
    • - Make sure you take note of our useful phone numbers

How do I know if my phone (calls, SMS, internet) can be used abroad?

Most phones have roaming automatically set up (unless you are on a local only tariff plan). However, to make sure your phone is roaming enabled, kindly visit our store at the Malta International Airport before your departure so that one of our store advisors can guide you accordingly

  • Once you have arrived in your visiting country you'll receive a Welcome SMS from us. This SMS will inform you about the rates of calls, SMS & internet usage applicable on the network you have connected with.

What do I need to do to use my phone when I am abroad?

Your phone will automatically select the Vodafone preferred network to benefit from the best Vodafone roaming rates.

If this doesn't happen, you can manually search for a network by following these instructions:

    • - Go to the Settings menu on your phone
    • - Go on Connections
    • - Choose More Networks
    • - Choose Mobile Networks
    • - Go to Network operators
    • - Select Search networks and Pick a Network

How can I ensure that I’m connected to Vodafone’s preferred roaming network if I am travelling near bordering countries?

If you are roaming abroad and are travelling near a border area, your device may lose coverage with your operator and try to connect automatically to the nearest foreign network. To avoid connecting to a foreign operator and incurring extra costs (if outside EU countries), we recommend that you manually configure the mobile network of your device, by selecting the Vodafone network in your phone settings.

I cannot use my phone while abroad, what could the problem be?

    The reasons may be:

    • - The automatic network-search function on your mobile phone might not be set so you might need to manually search for a network. Kindly refer to question 2 for guidance on how to set up Network search. Coverage in your area might be weak. You may manually select another network, if available.

How do I make calls when I am abroad?

To make calls to Malta from the visited country, dial the international code +356 and the number you would like to contact. To make calls to a phone number in the visited country or any other foreign country, simply add the country’s international prefix to the number that you wish to contact.

    > See the International prefixes from here

  • Useful phone numbers
What I need What should I do
    Vodafone Support Call +356 9999 9247
Voicemail Call +356 9990 9909 from your phone and follow the instructions
Lost / Stolen Phone Report it to our customer service representatives immediately on +356 9999 9247

How do I receive calls when I am abroad?

When you are abroad, anyone wanting to call you may dial your Vodafone mobile number without the international prefix. Callers from other foreign countries, including the one you are visiting will be able to contact you by dialling your mobile number including the Maltese international prefix, which is +356, as they would normally do.

How are calls charged when I use my phone abroad?

If you are roaming within the EU, you will not be charged for any incoming calls, but you are charged for any out-of-bundle outgoing calls as though you are still in Malta.

If you are roaming outside the EU, incoming calls, as well as outgoing calls, are charged at the full roaming call cost from Malta to the country where you are staying. This is not applicable if you have Rest of World traveller active.
