Roaming FAQs

Things you need to know before going abroad…

  • Before you leave

What do I need to do to use my phone before I go abroad?

Before going abroad, we recommend that you:

    • - Contact our Dedicated Business Support on +356 9991 6230 to make sure your tariff plan is roaming enabled
    • - Check that you are getting the best value rates when travelling abroad by being on one of our RED Business Plans
    • - Make sure you take note of our useful phone numbers

How do I know if my phone (calls, SMS, internet) can be used abroad?

Most phones have roaming automatically set up (unless you are on a local only tariff plan). However, to make sure your phone is roaming enabled, kindly visit our store at the Malta International Airport before your departure so that one of our store advisors can guide you accordingly.

  • Once you have arrived in your visiting country, you'll receive a Welcome SMS from us. This SMS will inform you about the rates of calls, SMS & mobile internet usage applicable on the network you have connected with. For more information about roaming rates visit

What do I need to do to use my phone when I am abroad?

Your phone will automatically select the Vodafone preferred network to benefit from the best Vodafone roaming rates. If this doesn't happen, you can manually search for a network by following these instructions:

    • - Go to the Settings menu on your phone
    • - Go on Connections
    • - Choose More Networks
    • - Choose Mobile Networks
    • - Go to Network operators
    • - Select Search networks and Pick a Network

How can I ensure that I’m connected to Vodafone’s preferred roaming network if I am travelling near bordering countries?

If you are roaming abroad and are travelling near a border area, your device may lose coverage with your operator and try to connect automatically to the nearest foreign network. To avoid connecting to a foreign operator and incurring extra costs (if outside EU countries), we recommend that you manually configure the mobile network of your device, by selecting the Vodafone network in your phone settings.

I cannot use my phone while abroad, what could the problem be?

    The reasons may be:

    • - The automatic network-search function on your mobile phone might not be set, so you might need to manually search for a network. Kindly refer to question 2 for guidance on how to set up network search. Coverage in your area might be weak. You may manually select another network, if available.

How do I make calls when I am abroad?

To make calls to Malta from the visited country, dial the international code +356 and the number you would like to contact. To make calls to a phone number in the visited country or any other foreign country, simply add the country’s international prefix to the number that you wish to contact.

    > See the International prefixes from here

How do I receive calls when I am abroad?

When you are abroad, anyone wanting to call you may dial your Vodafone mobile number without the international prefix. Callers from other foreign countries, including the one you are visiting will be able to contact you by dialling your mobile number including the Maltese international prefix, which is +356, as they would normally do.

How are calls charged when I use my phone abroad?

If you are roaming within the EU, you will not be charged for any incoming calls, but you are charged for any out-of-bundle outgoing calls as though you are still in Malta.
If you are roaming outside the EU, incoming calls, as well as outgoing calls, are charged at the full roaming call cost from Malta to the country where you are staying. This is not applicable if you have Rest of World traveller active.

  • Roaming in EU countries from June 2017

As from June 2017, you are able to use your mobile plan while roaming in the EU just like you would if you were in Malta, at no extra cost.

What is Roam Like At Home?

Roam Like At Home is the elimination of all roaming charges when roaming in the EU.
This means that if you are travelling in any EU country the tariff allocations of calls, SMS and mobile internet that you have in Malta will become available to when in Malta and EU countries.
Example: If you have unlimited calls and SMS then you will have unlimited calls and SMS in all EU countries including Malta.
If you exceed your local tariff allocations of calls, SMS and mobile internet when roaming in EU countries, you will be charged as though you are still in Malta. This means that the out of bundle rates you have locally, will be applied in EU countries.
It is important to note that calls/SMS bundles which are Vodafone to Vodafone only, are not part of the Roaming ’17 Change, meaning they cannot be used when roaming in EU.

Can I buy a SIM card in different EU Member States?

Yes, you can. However, it is important to note that the general rule is that if you spend more time in Malta and use your connection more in Malta than in EU countries, you can benefit from the Roaming ’17 changes. This is in-line with the Fair Use Policy

    Conditions for fair use

The Fair Use Policy (FUP) Vodafone is based on guidelines from the European Commission to prevent unreasonable use abroad. "Roam-like-at-Home 'is not intended to unreasonably (permanently) use abroad. This is why the European Commission has precautions established for mobile operators to prevent unreasonable use. The Fair Use Policy (conditions for fair use) is part of our Terms of Service.

    What is unreasonable use?

If there is unreasonable consumption and if you spend more than four months in EU outside of Malta, Vodafone sends you a message requesting to change your (roaming) behaviour or provide further information.
If your behaviour has not changed detectable after 14 days you will be charged a surcharge for abusive and anomalous usage while roaming.
The ‘fair use policy’ also applies to very specific cases such as bundles which boast a high internet allocation. In these cases, the internet allowance to be used in the EU will be capped and additional usage will be charged the same rates as in Malta.
